Tateguya Nomi. 24 mm, Japaneese Mortise Chisel with white oak handle (shinmochi). Length 225 mm. Handmade by Mr. Kyozo Fujikawa.
The blade is a Japaneese-style double-layered blade, laminated of hard high-carbon steel and a softer type of steel. The two different steels are heated to nearly the melting point and then hammered togehther (a lamination technique). The hard steel holds the sharp edge and the softer steel protects the hard steel, but also works as a shock-absorber when the chisel is struck by a (wooden) mallet. The chisel has a polished hollow ground back ("shiroura") on the bevel edge.
The Tateguya Nomi is available in the following dimensions; 1.5, 3, 4.5, 6, 7.5, 9, 10.5, 12, 15, 18, 21 and 24 mm width.
We would like to recommend the E C Emmerich Pockenholz mallet (ECE-212P), or equvivalent, for use of these tools.
