Oire Nomi, 42 mm, Japaneese Chisel with red oak handle (aka kashi). Length 225 mm.
The blade is a Japaneese style double-layered blade, laminated of hard high-carbon steel and a softer type of steel. The two different steels are heated to nearly the melting point and then hammered togehther (a lamination technique). The hard steel holds the sharp edge and the softer steel protects the hard steel, but also works as a shock-absorber when the chisel is struck by a (wooden) mallet. The chisel has a polished hollow ground back ("shiroura").
The Oire Nomi is a all-purpose kind of chisel and is available in 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 ,18 21, 24, 30, 36, 42 and 48 mm width.
